I Am a Car, I Am a Driver

Age group:
Duration:
Materials Needed:
• Chairs or benches to mark boundaries (optional) • Music or teacher’s voice
Step-by-Step Instructions :
• Invite children to choose what kind of vehicle they are (car, bus, truck, etc.) and name it, optionally adding a color. •Explain that children are both the car and the driver, moving carefully in the space. •Set clear boundaries where the “cars” are allowed to move. •Introduce simple rules: do not crash into others, keep safe speed, stop when the signal ends. •Use a rhythmic text or song (“I am a car, I am a driver…”) to guide movement speed. •Change the rhythm to make movement slower or faster. •If a child crashes or cannot stop, invite them to sit in the “driving school” area to observe briefly, then rejoin the game. •End with a final group ride and a full stop together.
Signs the Activity Is Working:
• Children follow rules and boundaries • Improved ability to stop and start on cue • Children regulate speed and movement • High engagement and imaginative play
Safety & Wellbeing Notes:
• Clearly define movement space before starting • Keep rules simple and repeated aloud • Avoid competitive elimination; use observation instead • Stop if space becomes unsafe or too crowded
Home Adaptation :
• Can be played with one or more children in a room or hallway Materials parents need • No materials needed (optional music) Simple parent instructions • Say the rhythmic text and guide your child’s movement speed, stopping together at the end
